Accountability in the Church

By Steve Allen - Saturday, March 7, 2026

Accountability in the church should be a normal practice as we help one another fight against sin and pursue holiness. This battle against temptation affects every person, since temptations are “common to man” (1 Corinthians 10:13) and “it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come” (Matthew 18:7). Creating an atmosphere in the church where accountability is expressed in love and then received in the same way is the challenge.

I’ve been told things by others that haven’t always been pleasant to hear and didn’t necessarily make me feel good about myself. That didn’t mean I didn’t try to receive them and look at myself in a mirror to see if there’s anything I could actually apply. Sometimes, the response is to bring anger at the person who delivers the accountability. Unfortunately, when that occurs it becomes more deflection and less of an opportunity for growth.

The church has missed out on this and mostly thrown the baby out with the bathwater. This has resulted in churches where brothers and sisters in Christ are allowed or enabled to behave in a ways that doesn’t reflect the character of Christ. If churches are going to return once again to the position of being the city on a hill with His light shining for all to see, we’ve got to work hard harder to figure out how to make healthy accountability happen.

We have to be all in this together. We have to work through our disagreements and given grace for our weaknesses, but we also have to be committed enough to grow in our walk with Christ that we are open to constructive criticism when it’s offered and don’t allow it to turn into a wall between us, other believers and then ultimately the Lord.

**If you’ve figured out how to make this happen, please let me know. For me, it’s definitely a work in progress.
